The department is a highly international and research-oriented department. More than 30 full-time junior and senior professors together with numerous PhD students form a community dedicated to studying all aspects of economics. The believe is that science prospers in an open intellectual climate and in a fruitful dialogue between theory and empirics.

Throughout its history, the department has hosted economists such as Menger, Wieser, Böhm-Bawerkand later Schumpeter and Hayek.
