Getting around Vienna

Public transport

Vienna has an efficient public transport system.

You can easily purchase tickets at the ticket machines in Vienna or online.

The 72-h Vienna ticket (EUR 17.10) is an economic option for getting around Vienna.

For those who plan to do some sightseeing while they are in Vienna, the Vienna Card (minimum price: EUR 17.00) might be the right choice. It is valid for 24 hours, 48 hours or 72 hours and entitles you to reduced rates when visiting museums, exhibitions, etc. You can buy the Vienna Card at the airport, in most hotels or online.

For general information about public transport and the different kinds of tickets, please see the website of Wiener Linien (Vienna’s public transport operator).

By bike / on foot

Vienna offers a wide range bicycle paths and is beautify to be discovered by foot.

In addition to various bike rental companies, there are also Citybike stations located all over the city. For more information about Citybike, click here.

As most sights in Vienna are located in the city centre and close to the conference venue, we also recommend exploring the city on foot.

Parking is very restricted in Vienna, in particular in the area around the conference venue. You have to use pre-paid parking tickets (in German: "Parkschein", see Picture), which are available in five colours:

  • purple = 15 minutes, free (your only allowed to use this parking ticket once)
  • red = 0.5 hours, EUR 1.10
  • blue = 1 hour, EUR 2.20
  • green = 1.5 hours, EUR 3.30
  • yellow = 2 hours, EUR 4.40

You can purchase these tickets at any newspaper kiosk ("Trafik"). The next one located nearby the conference venue is located at Schottentor. Parking with these tickets is limited to a maximum period of 2 hours. These parking tickets are only available in German.

If you want to park your car for a longer period, you have to use one of the car parks. The next one located nearby is the "WIPARK Votivpark-Garage" at Universitätsstrasse (open 24 hours, EUR 4.30 per hour).

The most inexpensive way to park in Vienna would be to use the park & ride stations for a fee of EUR 3.60 per day (we recommend being there at 6:00 to get a parking space). For further details on parking in Vienna, please click this link.
